Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can amitriptyline be the cause of the sweet taste in my mouth and from my finger tips? I've been taking it a little over a month and I've noticed my fingers/nails taste sweet and I have a sweet taste in my mouth often, regardless of how often I wash my hands or brush my teeth.
Thanks for your query . Amitriptyline know to cause side effects like alteration in taste of mouth and change level of blood sugar which are the probable reasons for sweet taste of your mouth and sweet smell from finger tips . But theses kind of side effects are very rare .
The other probable cause for sweet taste and smell could be undiagnosed diabetes specially type 1 . In this condition body become deficient of adequate insulin to break down sugar which leads to break down of fats and production ketone bodies in processes of ketoacidosis . These ketone bodies gives sweet smelling sweat and sweet breath or taste .
I would suggest you to consult your doctor for proper examination to find out exact cause . Doctor may order test for blood sugar level or urine for ketone bodies . Doctor may alter tour medicine ( if symptoms are because of amitriptyline ) or start treatment of diabetes.
Hope your concern has been resolved.
