Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can Ashwagandha Extract Be Taken While On Toperal And Synthroid?
My daughter wanted me to try this Ashwagandha extract. I want to know if it will bother any other meds I m taking. I have arthritis some trouble sleeping and some anxiety. The prescription meds I m on are Toperal for B/P, Synthroid for my thyroid, Hydrchlorothiazide to help with B/P and Singular to me breathe at night.
Hi & Welcome. I can understand your concerns regarding the safety of the prescribed medications.
Ashwagandha (withania somnifera) is an Ayurvedic medication claimed to be effective in the treatment of anxiety and insomnia. However, there is no scientific study done to prove its efficacy and safety in those conditions.
As such there is no documented harmful interactions between Ashwagandha and other medications given in your query it is better to consult your treating doctor for an alternate effective but a safer medication for the treatment of sleep disturbance and anxiety.
Since Synthyoroid is taken on an empty stomach before breakfast, see that no other prescribed medications are given within 4 hours of taking Synthyroid as they may decreased the absorption of Synthyroid if taken together.
Let her continue the prescribed medications regularly as advised.
Hope these answer your query.
