Can Ativan be given to a 79 yo pt that has just had a knee replacement 2days ago who is already takin Percocet? Pt is already diagnosed with dementia and also in pain. How can he be expected to do the therapy for knee if already dizzy and now thoroughly disoriented?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Using narcotic pain medications such as Percocet together with other medications that also cause central nervous system depression such as Ativan can lead to serious side effects including respiratory distress, coma, and even death.

Talk to the doctor if you have any questions or concerns. Your doctor may be able to prescribe alternatives that do not interact, or you may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring to safely use both medications.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Prabhash Verma, General & Family Physician
