Hi,I wanted to ask if azothioprine 50-100mg safe to take during pregnancy from the beginning .i have ulcerative colitis which does not stay in remission on any other medication. I recently suffered a still birth at 22 weeks with evidence of a missing ear and facial deformity I was on 20 mg of steroids and on mesalamine 400mg 3 tbs x 3 times daily at the time of conception.which I was advised to immediately reduce to 2 tbs twice daily. Since dosage could cause risk to the fetus. I flared up minorly at 8 weeks which settled down with no change to medication. Was on 10 mg steroids and 2 mesalamine twice daily.flared up more serverely at 16 weeks onwards.which did not settle down. I wanted to know if there s are chance of having a successful pregnancy on azothioprine as It kept me in remmission for a year and 6 monthes after discontinuing. Thank you
Hi, I think azathioprine will increase risk of congenital defect in the baby. It can also lead to growth restriction and preterm delivery. So, better to discuss all these things with your doctor and then take a decision.Hope it helps.
