Can Azithromycin And Ibuprofen Be Taken After Consuming Alcohol?

I recently had a dental appointment and was prescribed AZITHROMYCIN 250MG TAB (LUPIN) #6. I was also prescribed IBUPROFEN 800MG TAB (AMNEAL) #12. Tonight I had wine with dinner ( 2 small glasses). ( FYI I am 72 years old and otherwise healthy. No other medications, but also using a Nicoderm Patch.) AZITHROMYCIN has no warning about alcohol, but IBUPROFIN says avoid alcohol ... May I still take the prescribed dose tonight? Or should I wait til tomorrow? Thank you, Stephanie YYYY@YYYY

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It is always a good idea to avoid alcohol while being treated with antibiotics for any type of infection. Antibiotics and alcohol can cause similar side effects, such as stomach upset, dizziness and drowsiness. Combining azithromycin and alcohol can cause temporary liver damage. Interaction between Ibuprofen and alcohol is found to be moderate. It is advisable not to drink alcohol while taking ibuprofen. Alcohol can increase your risk of stomach bleeding caused by ibuprofen. Hence, it is better avoided.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
