Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi Ive had successful cataract surgery. Sometimes I take a Benedryl to help me sleep. It is the only drug I ever take except for a tylenol here and there or an ibuprofen. I was wondering if it is safe for me to have a benedryl two days after surgery. I have no pain or itching - really just to help me sleep.
Benadryl and other anti-histamines can cause dryness of the eye, which can then irritate the eye. It would be best, if possible, to avoid any irritants so soon after surgery. If you have significant problems sleeping, which is a common problem, you should consider asking your doctor for temporary medication. Sleep hygiene techniques, which can be found online, may also be helpful.
Hope this clarifies your concerns. Thank you for the query.
Tare care

Dr. Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
