Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can I take a benedryl with an ulcer? I have a history of ulcers from prednisone from the past. I noticed black stools this morning. I am taking sucralfate right now after seeing black stools. I stopped the sucralfate after a few days because it caused loose stools and stomach pain.
Hi I can understand your concern regarding the safety of Benadryl while having stomach ulcer. Incomplete data like purpose of taking Benadryl.
It is not advisable for you to take Benadryl as long as you have an ulcer in the stomach. Because Benadryl increases the stomach emptying time thus allowing more exposure of the ulcer to the stomach contents (food and acid) and hence an ulcer may be aggravated.
I advise you to take a proton pump inhibitor like Pantoprazole which will not only suppress the stomach acid production but also reduces the bleeding and promote the healing of the ulcer.
Hope I could answer your query.
A feed back is appreciated.
