Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have not taken Boniva for the past 2 years. Prior to that I took it approx. 8 years. My bone scan says I am at moderate risk for a osteoporitic fracture in the next 10 yrs. or an 18% risk. Should I go back on Boniva now or wait another 2 yrs. til my next bone scan? What is the recommended time to take a break for these type of medications or is that no longer a recommendation?

Can Boniva Be Taken To Prevent Osteoporosis?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. Boniva drug is having Ibandronic acid. It is a bisphosphonate group of drug which is an excellent medicine in osteoporosis. So, you should start the Boniva injection once a year for lifelong. No need to take a break from this injection as it is safe for lifelong use. Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Regards, Dr. Kaushal Bhavsar
