Thank you for your query
Terbutaline is a
bronchodilator which eases cough that arises due to narrowed airways in the lung (asthma,
bronchitis, for instance)
Other effects include stimulation of the heart and blood vessels which may lead to disturbances in
heart rate, rhythm and alterations in blood pressure. This makes it unsafe to use in people with
heart disease.
Do not administer any OTC without consulting a physician.
If he has sputum while coughing, it is best that all the sputum comes out. Do not suppress the cough. Enable expectoration by keeping him well hydrated. If he has difficulty bringing it out, some gentle
chest physiotherapy will help (has to be done under medical supervision initially) or an expectorant only preparation.
Garlic is an excellent mucolytic and antioxidant. Will loosen the secretions so that he may cough it out easier
If he has dry cough, or strains a lot during an episode which disturbs his sleep or routine activity, or if he has a fever with greenish or
yellow sputum, I would recommend seeing his physician to rule out an infectious cause and treat accordingly.
Hydration is key to alleviate worsening of symptoms.
