Can Cefuroxime Axetil Be Taken For A Long Duration?
Hello. My son was prescribed with cefuroxime axetil for 10 days for the treatment of thyphiod fever. But because he is always having thyphiod so I want to ask if I can give him the drugs for 14 days or more? He is 8 years old and is on 250mg twice a day. Thank you
Hello, The treatment for typhoid by cefuroxime axetil should be continued for 7 days after body temperature is normalised. So if your son's fever subsided on 7th day after treatment, you can continue it until 14 days. More than 14 days treatment is not recommended. If fever and/or abdominal pain persists beyond 14 days, you need to get investigations like blood culture and sensitivity done. Your son may require more effective antibiotics at this point. Please feel free to discuss the above information with your paediatrician and decide upon further treatment course. I hope the above information helps you. Thanks for writing into healthcaremagic.
