Hello,
Cipla actin is not a recommended drug for weight gain though, in many studies, it is proven to be causing weight gain.
Of course, we sometimes use it as an off-label drug for loss of appetite when all the other organic causes like malignancy are ruled out.
However, the safety and efficacy of this medication are not studied in children 13 yr old in the dosage of 4 mg thrice daily oral route.
Before jumping into conclusion, I would like to make you aware of a few important points regarding weight gain in children:
1) Regular or periodic measurement of weight and assessment of gain or loss of weight over a period of 3-6months is necessary to label any
child underweight.
2) Reasons for
weight loss or failure of weight gain in children are :
a) Poor intake which may be due to the inherent nature of children or due to
lack of appetite.
b) Presence of worms in the gut that lead to
malabsorption, lack of appetite and failure of weight gain.
c) Severe anaemia, any liver diseases like
hepatitis A.
d) Even those who suffered a bad viral infection or major infections like
typhoid,
malaria lose appetite for few weeks following recovery.
So, let me conclude my discussion with the following points:
1) It’s better not to use Cipla actin for your children.
2) Regarding appetite, just check for the above mentioned causes and if everything is alright, you need to find some other way out to make the kids eat a nutritious diet.
3) If still, the problem persists, you can see a paediatrician and can follow his advice.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
