Can Citalopram Be Used To Treat Bipolar Disorder?

my boyfriend of 17 years is very manic bipolar and he can not sit for no amount of time and has bursts of energy. He is irritated easily. He has every symptom of bipolar mania. He went to the doctor to get help for the first time ever and the doctor put him on citalopram and seroquel. after reading up on these medications they are used for depression and give you energy. i believe this is the last thing he needs is more energy.

Hi
Thanks for using healthcare magic

In bipolar manic episode, antidepressant like citalopram could aggravate the condition. In that case, his antidepressant should be off and he should only be on mood stabilizer like valproate or lithium with antipsychotic. These drugs would help him to control the underline psychotic symptoms. In case, you need further help, you can consult his psychiatrist or call us.

Thanks
