Can Clarithromycin Cause Irreversible Damage To The Ears?

I have been prescribed clarithromycin for a chest infection . Also 30mg prednisolone . I have some prexosting hearing loss in my right ear which doesn t need a hearing aid. I have had menieres in my left ear and wear a hearing aid. Yesterday and today I noticed that my hearing is worse. I have had 2/12days treatment. I see that clarithromycin can cause reversible and irreversible hearing damage. What should I do ?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Clarithromicine can cause hearing loss when it is used for a long period or in case of overdose. We prescribe Clarithromicine daily in our daily practice and never experienced this side effect on our patients. You should not be worried.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi,
