Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can Clonidine Be Substituted With Another Medicine For Treatment Of Hypertension?
My wife is suffering from High Blood Pressure. She is 71 years old and currently taking Lisinopril 40mg, Metoprolol 50 mg, and clonidine 0.1 mg (3 times daily). The Lisinopril and Metoprolol do not seem to be effective, therefore she has to take the Clonodine 3 times a day to keep the blood pressure at or below 140/90. With just Lisinopril and Metoprolol her blood pressure can get up to 170/100. Clonidine is effective but The problem with Clonidine is that it makes here very sleepy, tired and very constipated. What BP medication/dosage would you recommend she try other than clonidine.
You can go for hypertensive profile. Consult physician for advise on treatment with medicine and diet control like restricted salt diet. With her age the physician can recommend medicine which is free from side effect and best suited for her, exclude diabetes. Life style change like enhanced physical activity like regular morning walk should be under taken. You should have proper sleep and mental rest.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Ashok Kumar Dash
