Can Clotrimazole And Fusidic Acid Be Applied Together On Infants For Treating Ringworms?

Hi, my 7 month old baby has a bad case of ringworm on her face and neck. She was prescribed clotrimazole but the infection got worse. She was then prescribed fusidic acid which helped for a while. The infection came back and the doc has prescribed clotrimazole again but after 2 weeks it is very red and inflamed and doesn t seem to be helping. Can I use both creams together?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The first issue is to determine if the infection is really a ringworm. This can be determined by a simple examination of the skin scrapping.

To me, as the baby is too young (only 7 months old) that could be due to possible infantile eczema, and not really a ringworm. However, I'd advise to get this examination done to determine the right diagnosis.

The correct treatment of ringworm could be either with miconazole or terbinafin (antifungals). Clotrimazole also can help.

Fusidic acid cream is used in case of bacterial infection. So, if this is inflamed, it is more likely to be an infantile eczema more than ringworm infection.

Change shampoo or any other detergent you might be using. Do use only eczema products including shampoo, moisturizer, etc.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
