Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have normal cholesterol, HDL, LDL, TRiglycerides and ratio. CRP is 1.3, calcium screening was 22. I am 60 yrs old, eat fairly well and exercise 3 times a weeks. I am 5 3 and weight 105 lbs. BP 106/60. My doctor wants me to take Crestor and a baby aspirin as heart/stroke precaution/prevention I am concerned about this recommendation and side effects.
The idea of taking baby Asprin and lipid lowering drugs for avoiding heart and brain attacks is pretty old one. These drugs are quite good in reducing the incidence of heart attack and stroke in those patients who has risks like previous stroke, or cardiac diseases, or high cholesterol.
However it is use in people with out any risk factor is not justified. A very recent study showed more harm then benefit with these drugs when used in normal people. As you do not have any risk factor, I understand there is no need to use these drugs. Just observe healthy life style as you are already doing.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman,
General & Family Physician
