Can Dicyclomine Be Taken For Chest Pain?

My husband is having chest pains. We went to the ER late last night and he was checked. ECG and CT were both performed and results showed no abnormalities. MRI was done of gall bladder and that too showed no inflammation. Doctor prescribed Dicyclomine in the event that this is a esophageal spasm, but he did not believe this was the diagnosis. Should he take this medication?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear Madam, Hi & Welcome.

Dicyclomine is not used for the treatment of chest pain.

Dicyclomine is an anticholinergic (antispasmodic) used to treat painful spasms such as esophageal spasm, intestinal colic, biliary colic, renal colic or irritable bowel syndrome.

In view of the normal ECG and CT scans the chest could have been due to some other causes like musculoskeletal pain or pain due to pleurisy which need to be evaluated properly and treated.

Hope this will help him.
