Can Diltiazem Hydrochloride Be Taken For Hypertension?
Hello doctor, thank you for this time. My mom is 81, sedentary. she is 5 4 180 lbs. her blood pressure checked by doctor was 180/130. Her doctor prescribed the medication Diltazem hydrocloride . Can you tell me if there is anything with this medication to worry of as I read before some medications can do harm or is this a safe medication?
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. I understand your concern. Diltiazem is a calcium channel blocker. It works by relaxing the muscles of the heart and blood vessels. It is used to treat hypertension, angina and certain heart rhythm disorders. Kindly avoid intake of Grapefruit and grapefruit juice, as it may interact with diltiazem and lead to unwanted side effects. Based on the response to this medication, it would be decided weather she would require any other medication(s) along with it or not. Kindly give the medication as has been prescribed and do the necessary follow-up as advised. Hope the information provided would be helpful. All the best.
