Can Effexor Cause Polymyalgia Rheumatica?

My husband was prescribed effexor-xr 75mg in early April 2017 and shortly e had the following symptoms. Loss of appetite, constipation, tiredness, fatigue, tremor shaking and twitching, was anxious jittery had loss of strength, severe muscle stiffness in his legs, pale skin, poor coordination and weight loss. The doctor (not his usual one) was so thorough in his endeavour to find out the problem and sent my husband for a CT scan, bone scan, blood tests, urine test and bowel test etc. mainly because of the extreme pain in his legs. Early May he put him on prednisolone and he had wonderful relief. He then had several blood tests and told my husband that he had polymyalgia rheumatica. I believe that the Effexor has caused the polymyalgia rheumatica. Are there any cases like this that have been reported. Regards, Jeanette Roberts.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for trusting HCM

Effexor will not cause polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR). PMR is an inflammatory condition and the risk factors include genetic factors, viral infection etc.
Your husband can continue taking Effexor. It will not affect PMR. Treatment of PMR is with corticosteroid (prednisone).

Hope this answers your question
Please let me know if you need further clarification
