Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can Enalapril And Hydrochlorothiazide Be Taken While On Allopurinol?
I am taking 200 mg of allopurinol a day to manage my gout. I have been taking for about 10 years. I am also taking 20 mg of enalapril and 12.5 mg of hydrochlorthiazide. Both of which are contraindicated with the allopurinol. Been taking for years with yes problem. Should I be concerned. Thanks Tim
I would explain that Hydrochlorothiazide may increase uric acid levels. Regarding enalapril, it can lead to allergic reactions when taken concomitantly with allopurinol.
For this reason, I would recommend switching to another drug, like a calcium channel blocker (amlodipine, lercanidipine) for blood pressure control, which does not have this adverse effect.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Ilir Sharka, Cardiologist
