Can Epsom Salt Bath Be Taken While On Hemodialysis?

I have been on home hemodialysis for 3 years (40 hours/week). Am doing well. Am 67 years old. I have very sore piriformous on my right side and my massage therapist suggested a warm Epsom salt bath. Is this harmful for me as I have no way of removing toxins other than dialysis (I don t pee.) Thank you. Bonnie

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the hemodialysis need indicates grave dysfunction of both kidneys with raised levels of creatinine and blood urea levels due to damage of filtering capacity and other functions of the kidneys. Though there are no benefits of Epsom salt bath in such condition, there are no ill effects as well and hence you can do it without any side effects over your current hemodialysis status.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
