Can Furabid Be Used For An Infection In Outer Ear?

heyy doctor! we are currently travelling asia and we ended up on a beautiful island in vietnam where my boyfriend got infected with an outer ear infection. it's been harassing him for about 3 weeks now. there is no proper doc on the island, the only thing i brought with me is FURABID (antibiotics) can we use this ? thanks in advance, anneke & duco

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that as your boyfriend is suffering from outer ear infection also known as Otitis Externa and it needs a proper antibiotic coverage both oral as well as ear drops..

As far as Furabid is concerned it contains active ingredient Nitrofurantoin and is commonly used for urinary tract infect..
As you have an ear infection you can take antibiotics like Augmentin and also anti inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen..
You can also use Otogesic ear drops..
Do cool compresses over the ear..
Avoid excess water exposure like swimming as it can cause further infection..

I would however suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like otoscopy, x ray etc can help in diagnosis..

He can be advised antibiotic and analgesic ear drops along with oral antibiotics and painkillers
