Can Gabapentin/Neurontin Cause Blood Clots Post Vascular Graft Occlusion?

Hi. I take Gabapentin/Neurontin. I just got out of the hospital with a Vascular Graft Occulation. i have had several grafts that kept ocluding. Approximately 12 years ago I had an iliac to the aortic by-pass. Six months later I had another blood clot then had a stint in the by-pass. From11-1/2 years I was ok and all of a sudden I got another blood clot. I had an occlusion in my by-pass. They took me to radiology and they broke up the clot. My question is I have had severe thigh, calf and sometimes foot and area they put the sheath. In the hospital I took Gabapentin/Neurontin in the hospital and my leg remained severely hurtful. I am home and was in pain so I called the vascular surgeon. They told me to take Gabapentin 3 times a day if needed. Do you Agee with the on call doctor? The pain did go away and most of my pain is gone. Why did I get a blood clot a after all those years?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The intake of Gapentin is not associated with the recurrent blood clot formation in any documented forms. However, the complete evaluation of coagulation parameters with levels of thrombin, prothrombin, complements, protein C & S are mandatory to work up the possible cause of the hypercoagulation state. Additionally, concurrent smoking, obesity, lack of physical exercises are also very vital factors contributing in it.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
