Can Gabapentin, Oxycodone And Morphine Be Taken Together?
My husband was just given a script for gabapentin . Just a little history . He has crohns disease he has had it for 50 years and has had several surgeries. He has been suffering this past year with back, leg and joint pain. The other major problem he is having is pain in his stomach he thinks it is at a intestine connection site from a previous surgery. The doctor has him on morphine time released am and pm. Also 2 oxycodone a day. The pain clinic put him on gabapentin 300 mg . 2 at 3 times a day. We are worried about the mixture of the 3 different medications.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
May be taken together with close monitoring. Taking Morphine together with Oxycodone can also cause central nervous systemdepression, can also lead to serious side effects including respiratory distress, coma, and even death.
Consult his treating doctor to prescribe alternatives that do not interact, or he may need a dose adjustment or more frequent monitoring to safely use both medications.
Taking Gabapentin together with Morphine and/or Oxycodone may increase side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, difficulty concentrating, impaired thinking and motor coordination, which may result in falls and injuries. Your husband should avoid activities requiring mental alertness, such as driving or operating hazardous machinery if any.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
