Can Gentamicin Shots Be Taken While On Methenamine Hippurate?

My doctor has prescribed long term methenamine hiperturate, 1gm. I didn t realize it s an antibiotic and am concerned I will become resistant to all antibiotics. I m also allergic to or have reacted to most regular antibiotics. It was suggested that I take a series of three injections of gentamicin for my bladder infection. In reading the information on gentamicin, it sounds a lot like the CIPRO that I just reacted to last week. Is it ok to take these injections? Thanks for your help and answers, Sue

Hello,

Yes. Gentamicin injections can be taken while on Methenamine hippurate. Methenamine hippurate antiseptic which decomposes in acidic urine to release formaldehyde which kills the bacteria. It is effective to prevent and control drug-resistant urinary tract infections. The antibiotic Gentamicin does not interact with Methenamine hippurate hence can be taken together.
