Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I take glimepiride tabs for my high blood sugar, but I had a steroid shot yesterday for a cold & it has made my sugar levels rise. I have some metformin still from a previous prescription before my dr changed me to glimepiride. My question is, I take the glimepiride at night, but can I take a metformin now to help lower my levels? Is there danger in mixing the 2?
Yes, glimepiride and metformin can be safely taken together. If fact, international guidelines on the control and treatment of diabetes recommend that if metformin alone cannot control blood sugar levels, glimepiride be added and viceversa.
Having said that, I warn you, that you should not "play doctor"; don't self-medicate. Visit a physician, have him review your medical records and fill-in a prescription.
