Hi doctor. I ve recently had an ESR blood test, I had a phone call today saying it is abnormal. I m HIV positive, so my question is could this be the reason for my abnormal test result or do I need to be worried I have another underlying issue? Thanks

Hello, Sad to hear about your report. If I am your advising doctor I would like to know you that HIV is not directly causing the raise in ESR but there may be some underlying issue which causes raise in ESR. I would like to add the most common of it is the tuberculosis. In my advice I would like to add you one more investigation to do is sputum for AFB staining. TB and HIV are most commonly associated disease and need to be investigated. I would like to give you a followup after testing for sputum AFB. kindly contact me after the test. Thank you Dr. Arun Tank.
Hi, dear. I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern about your ESR. there are many causes of high ESR. and HIV itself leads to high esr. but there are also high chance of other concurrent infection with HIV. tuberculosis is the common one. Its common with hiv and its the common reasons for high ESR. So, just simply consult your doctor and check report of ESR. how much rise is also significant. so check for that. and investigate further if needed. then take treatment accordingly. Hope I have answered your question, if you have any doubts you can ask me further. I will be happy to answer you. Thanks for using health care magic. Wish you a very good health.
