Can HSV Be Contracted Through Sexual Intercourse?

9 months after my divorce (5days ago) I have protected vaginal intercourse for the first time with someone new. It was kind of rough and I was not lubricated well (I m 40+). 4-5 hours after sex, I feel a tiny discomfort down there. I check it out with a mirror and see what looks like a small tear on the outside of my labia minora. Of course, then I think, oh no, maybe it s an hsv 1 outbreak. The tear heals up in less than three days. Exactly 4 days after sex, he says he isn t feeling well. Initially stuffy nose, but then cough and sore throat. I am deathly afraid that I have given him my hsv 1 and that he is in the flu-like symptoms prior to sores forming. Today is day 5. In the 26 years since my original diagnosis, I have never given anyone hsv 1. I was married for 14 years and had a serious boyfriend before that for three years. We always used condoms. I haven t had anything that even resembled an ob in 7-8 years. I have read that genital to genital transmission of hsv 1 is rare, but I am paralyzed with fear that this will be the exception because I don t know if the tear was a herpes sore or just a fissure from the rough sex, lack of lubrication. Could someone please tell me what they think the chances are of me passing this on to him are? I am almost unable to function. Your help and advice is so appreciated.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

HSV-1 is transmitted with kissing and not with intercourse. probably everyone in his lifetime may have get infected in childhood or teenager. HSV-1 only causes oral lesions and not vaginal lesions. HSV-2 differs from HSV-1 because is sexually transmitted and causes genital lesions.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
