Can Haldol Be Given To An Elderly Patient?

During a recent hospital stay (for hip surgery) my mother, 85, began experiencing deep, vivid paranoia. The medical staff chose to give her Haldol, which brought quick relief. Prior to the need for the surgery, she was entering early dementia (forgetfulness, frequent repetition of recent comments and rejection of logic). I have read that Haldol should not be given to elderly people with dementia. She has continued to receive Haldol at the post-surgery rehab center. Should I be concerned about her taking Haldol?

Hi,

Haldol had been traditionally used for patients with acute confusional states or delirium. Though it may have side effects, but in such cases the benefits are more then the risk. So. Of he is fine with it, it's better to continue. Yes you must observe him if you see any major side effects specially if stiffness in body, or high temperatures. Otherwise it may be given in such cases.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
