Can Hydrochlorothiazide Be Taken Before A Knee Replacement Surgery?

My husband is due to have knee replacement surgery tomorrow morning. The doctor told him not to take his Medformin in the morning. And I thought he also said he should not take his Hydrochlorothiazide but my husband doesn t remember that direction and we have misplaced our paperwork. I think I remember the doctor being concerned that the anesthesiologist would also be giving him drugs that might lower his blood pressure and the doctor did not want it to get too low. Does that sound right? He also takes baby aspirin and he thinks that is the one the doctor said not to take.

Hi,

Usually, right before surgery, patients are advised to hold off on blood pressure lowering meds because yes, most of the anesthetics do lower blood pressure.

Regarding Aspirin, it decreases platelet counts/function, so if they want a patient to hold off on it to decrease the risk of bleeding, they usually request it be held for a few weeks.

I advise you call the number of the doctor if he/she is in a group practice and you will get to talk with whomever is on-call tonight.

If the surgery is at a university hospital or other facility where they have resident doctors, you can call there and a resident doctor will advise you of the things he needs to hold before surgery.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
