General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Hydroxychloroquine is commonly prescribed to treat rheumatoid arthritis, malaria and other autoimmune diseases.

Generally it is very well tolerated. Its common side effects include nausea and diarrhea, which often improve with time.

Other side effects are skin rash, changes in skin pigment, hair changes, muscle weakness, visual disturbances, and anemia (in individuals with G6PD deficiency or porphyria).

There is no documented evidence that it affects the normal contraction and relaxation of sphincter of Oddi.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
