Hi There. I am 24 years of age, female with a goiter. I have had it since I was young but it has never caused me any problems and my thyroid is functioning normally. Recently however a doctor prescribed me Eltroxin 50mg to help shrink it as he said in the future goiters can become cancerous. However since doing additional research online i have found that this drug is mainly used to treat people who have an under active thyroid. I am therefore now very concerned that if I start to take these tablets, it may interfere with the normal fuctioning of my thyroid and do damage and I may become depend on them. Could you please advise as to what I should do?
Hello, I read carefully your query and understood your concerns. There was a kind a treatment for the goiter and thyroid cysts in the past, but is not applicated in the our days. Taking thyroid hormones when their level is within the normal ranges is not recommended. If you have only goiter without nodules or cysts you need to check the TSH level every 6 months. If you have nodules than further exams are needed. Hope the information will help. Kind regards, Dr.Mirjeta
