Can Insulin Cause A Feeling Of Being Cold In An Elderly Person?

my 67 year old wife who has been insulin dependent since 1981 recently went off insulin while in a re-hab facility and is now at home complaining of being cold while dressed and under two blankets. Her blood glucose readings today were 166 at 8:00am and 142 at 6:30pm. Could insulin be causing this total feeling of being cold?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, the feeling of being cold at 67 years age with recent history of Insulin abstinence indicate variations in the thermo-regulatory set point of hypothalamus. It is the effect of Insulin over various metabolic pathways to maintain body temperature via their unique mode of actions over various metabolic pathways of the body as liver, adipose tissue and others. Kindly discuss the need of restarting of Insulin with her primary care provider to get well soon.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
