Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is it safe to take kalms before an operation? I am having a lumpectomy to remove a cancer in my breast and two Lynn nodes removed. I am beside myself with anxiety and I find kalms do help a little when I start to panic about all the procedures and the diagnosis. I am worried in case I shouldn t take them prior to my op.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Kalms contains valerian root extract. Unfortunately, if used prior to surgery it can interact (better enhance) with sedatives given by the OMS before surgery and might produce excessive drowsiness.
That's why I highly recommend not to take it and to discuss with OMS about your anxiety and that you have been taking Kalms.
Although natural, these types of supplement might interact with sedative substances administered during surgery, and might prolongate their lifetime and effect to the body.
Hope this answers your query.
Once again, all the best for your surgery and follow up treatment. Dr.Albana Sejdini
