Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My daughter was diagnosed with Juvenile Myoclonic Epilepsy about 5 years ago she is being treated with Keppra, she only had the arm jerks to begin with. She is 18 now and we had to put her on birth control pills ( Sprintec ) 2 years ago because she had really heavy bleeding and bad cramps. My question is, is there a drug interaction between these two? I am asking because she has had 3 actual seizures in the past 6 months and before that she hadn t had any. So we are trying to figure out what is going on with her that is different. Thanks!
hi , your concern is very right , most of the anti epileptics have important interaction , but thats mostly for the older ones , keppra itslekf has many side effects , but there is little interaction of this drug with other including sprintec, so for the fits i wont blame the combination , we need to look for other causes. mostly in such cases we need to initially rule out other causes of provoking fits like bright lights, electrolytes imbalance , low or high calcium , infection etc, once these have been rules out , other option would be then to increase the dose of keppra if not maximum , or add another drug or even change the drug, however this is all a consultant job. so what i can say is that it does not look to be the interaction of the drug for the fits ,we need to see your doc for other possible causes and management.
