Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my stepmom is in the hospital and has had a quadruple bypass. she has been on Klonpin for 30 years. The hospital did not give here the Klonpin for the first 10 days she was in the hospital. She could not sleep and started seeing things floating through the room. Was this a withdrawl from not taking the medication? She has been on it for 3 days now and has had 2 seziures since. They did not give her the medication because they thought it was just as needed. You cannot just stop giving someone a med that they have been taking for 30 years and not expect them to not have withdraws. How long will it take to get the medication back in her system so hopefully she will not have anymore seizures. Thank you for your time, Melvin
Hi Clonazepam (klonopin) is a benzodiazepine molecule andit is known that sudden withdrawal of these drugs after prolonged heavy intake might lead to seizures. In case of this patient however, there is a history of quadruple bypass which speaks of compromised cardiovascular system, hence the cause of seizures cannot be directly attributed to drug withdrawal alone. In any case, make sure you know the pattern of her drug intake for all these years (klonopin), quantity and frequency of use in detail, and share it with the treating team. I hope this helps you, thank you for the question.
