Can Lamotrigine Be Discontinued Cold Turkey?

I have been taking 5 times the amount of lamotrigine as i was supposed to. The doctor did not explain, and pharmacist had no idea when i asked him, the directions on the bottles were not clear. I now have all the side affects. I don t want to go to the ER. What can i expect if i quit without tapering off it?

Hi, thanks for your question.

In order to better answer your question, I would need you to provide a bit more information about the medication. For example, what are you taking Lamotrigine for? How much and since when have been you taking it?? And what side effects have you suffered so far?

Generally it is not advisable for a patient to discontinue this medication cold turkey on their own. Your treating physician would be in a better position to take you through the process of discontinuation as there might be withdrawal effects. For example, a person taking Lamotrigine for epilepsy may suffer seizures, alongside other problems, upon abrupt discontinuation.

Hope this helps.
