Can Levothyroxine Cause Weight Gain?

Yes, I m àn RN and have been taking levothyroxine for at least five years and have been fighting weight gain for the entire time even though I walk three miles a day and holding caloric intake to1200 calories or less daily. This is extremely frustrating and depressing for me. I could use some ďirection/adevise on this situation.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

This medicine is a hormone replacement usually given to patients with thyroid problems, specifically, hypothyroidism. Synthroid is speeding up your metabolism and bring it back to normal. So, it does not commonly cause weight gain.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
