Can Levothyroxine Intake For Shrinking The Goiter Be Stopped To Avoid Gaining Weight?
I have a goiter and diagnosed with hashimotos. also have been diagnosed with graves disease when thyroid was in hyperactive phase. I am currently on levothyroxine to try and shrink the goiter. I have since gained about 15 pounds and want to discontinue the levothyroxine. Can I do that?
Hashimotos thyroiditis as an autoimmune condition which leads to hypothyroidism. Most patients with this condition will need life long supplementation with levothyroxine since the thyroid gland is unable to produce adequate amounts of the hormone. It is a very essential and moreover safe drug provided the dose is appropriate and your thyroid function is monitored regularly. It is best you continue with the drug and monitor your thyrpid function as per your clinicians advice.
