Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can my mother in law take Lisinopril and Melotonin? She has been taking blood pressure medicine for hypertension for 20+ years. She has had sleep problems the whole time. She was never prescribed anything until now, for sleep. Her doctor prescribed Trazodone, but it is an anti-depressant and she is not depressed. I am wondering if she can use melotonin instead, but some resources say not to mix melotonin and blood pressure medicine. How does melotonin interact with Lisinopril? May they be taken together
Yes, you are right. Trazodone is used as an anti – depressant. But it has also been used for treatment of insomnia (less sleep) by many clinicians. Melatonin is also used for treatment of insomnia but there are insufficient data in medical literature for its effectiveness in insomnia. Trazodone related data are so many. So it is better to follow of physician suggestion. You can use tablet alprazolam 0.25 mg daily at bed time as sleep inducing pill, but be careful it is addicting drug on long term use. Advice 1. Continue trazodone as suggested by your doctor 2. Do not use melatonin without your doctor’s suggestion 3. Avoid tea & coffee in evening & night 4. Avoid alcohol and smoking especially in night 5. Exercising for at least 30 minutes per day can improve your sleep Thanks!
