Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My roommate has just been put on metatoprol ( lopressor) as her BP was 200+/190...Many years ago I was put on lopressor and another doctor asked why they had decribed it as it was not a good drug for me ( 140/90 and borderline) It made me sluggish and took away my sex drive to boot. I was put on something else for years -very popular throughout the 90 s but eventually no longer used in Britain...I told my doctor about it and my concerns and he concurred he did not like the drug.. He put me on lisinopril about 8 years ago and I feel great. My question is as she has just today been diagnosed with high BP and put on the Beta Blocker ( she will be 72 in a month) is that a good med for her temporarily to get the BP down ...but then is it advisable to switch to an ACE inhibitor like lisinopril? thank you

hi the combination of ace-inhibitor & beta-blockers are quite safe. again it all depends on the heart rate & the left ventricular function as well as the body stress. the action of the drugs varies from person to person, body to body also with the patient condition. if she is stable and tolerating these drugs , then there is no need to worry untill & unless she has some allergy , or known asthmatic. all the best take care
