yes, since there is a shortage of atenolol my dr. has prescribed metopropolol once a day instead of 2x a day as the atenolol. same strength 50mg. and is supposed to be an extended bp pill. I also take Lisinopril at the same time (AM) also said I should monitor my bp
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advise.
Patients may monitor their blood pressure at home when there is medication changes but you need to make sure you have an accurate blood pressure machine (you can take it with when you go to the doctor and ask him to measure the BP with his machine and yours to see if they give similar reading).
Measuring the blood pressure might be recommended to be done at different times in different days, one day in the morning, another day in midday and another day in the evening so you can see how it varies during the day. You keep record of the date, time and measurement and the arm you checked it (sometimes there may be different readings in each arm).
Another thing to keep in mind is that some patients get more anxious about their blood pressure levels if they check their blood pressure often and this may contribute to higher readings. If you notice that by checking your blood pressure regularly causes you more anxiety, it might be more helpful to measure it once in 1-2 weeks at the doctors office.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
