Can Meftal Be Given A Fourth Time For Recurrent Fever In A Child?
Hello, my son of 2 years and 4 months has fever (101) from morning. First I gave paracetamol (P-250) and fever got reduced twice. then it didn t work for the third time and I gave Meftal after 1 and hour gap after having given P250. Now (for the fourth dosage), even after having given Meftal, fever is not reducing. What to do? Should I give again P250? Should I go to hospital asap? thanks for your kind help
Hello, Thanks for the query. Paracetamol 250 mg/5 ml, or mefenamic acid, both have good antipyretic effect. But usually this action lasts for a maximum of 4 to 6 hours. Both these drugs only reduce fever, they do not have any action on the cause that leads to fever. Sometimes regular dose may not work and a higher dose may be required. Plus if there is need for an antibiotic to control infection, then that needs to be given along with either of these drugs. So it is better that you take the child to a hospital or a pediatrician. Thanks.
