Can Metformin Cause Cirrhosis Of The Liver?

I just found out last week that I have cerosis(spelling?) of the liver. I am also a diabetic on metformin. Can diabetes medication cause cerosis of the liver and if so is there an other med I could take that would not affect my liver? thank you anyway, but I live on a fixed income and can t afford paying $15 per month. I m seeing a liver specialist in a couple of weeks, and I ll see what he suggests I do.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for trusting HCM

Metformin will not cause liver cirrhosis.
Liver cirrhosis can occur due to several factors like alcohol, hepatitis b/c, metabolic disorders(including increased iron), certain enzyme deficiencies etc.
A detailed evaluation is required to pinpoint a particular cause.
Please be advised to follow up a Gastroenterologist to undergo necessary work up.

Hope this answers your question
