Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Does Metformin raise Gamma GT levels? I ve been taking 500mg Metformin twice a day for PCOS for approx 4-5 months and my Gamma GT and Serum ALT levels have continued to increase over the same time period. Gamma GT is currently 132iU/L and Serum ALT is 74iU/L. Thanks
Metformin is unlikely to be the cause. The common side effects of metformin include abdominal cramps, diarrhea, vitamin B-12 deficiency and a less common but serious condition lactic acidosis. Based on the results of lab test, liver injury does not seem to be due to metformin.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
