Can Metoprolol Be Taken For High Blood Pressure And Elevated Heart Rate?

HI. I am a 50 year old female. In the past I have taken metropolol to control irregular ectopic heartbeats. A problem that started when I went on levothyroxine. For a year now I have been taking 150 mg of Irbesartan for hypertension. I have a resting heart rate that is usually around 90. I am about 20 pounds overweight and have had stress tests etc. to rule out any heart problems. Would it not make sense to return to metropolol in place of Irbesartan to control the bp with the benefit of reducing my heart rate as well?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear Ma'am, Hi & Welcome.
The irregular ectopic heart beats could be due to side effect of Levothyroxine.
Consult your treating doctor to adjust the dose of Levothyroxine so as to keep the TSH level in the range of 0.4-4 mIu.
Even after dose reduction of Levothyroxine if you continue to have the irregular ectopic heart beats a beta blocker like Metoprolol may be used instead of Irbesartan. It will not only lower the high BP but also control the ectopic heart beats.
Hope this answers your query.
