Can Metronidazole 500mg Be Taken Along With Trazodone 100mg?
I am taking metronidazole 500 mg twice a day for ten days I m on day 3 went to Dr and he wants me to start taking trazodone 100 mg at night but I don t know if I was suppose to wait till I m done I am concerned if there could be a drug interaction or if I should wait till I m done taking the antibiotics.
Hi & Welcome. It is not safe to take these medications together.
Prolonged QT interval on electrocardiogram (ECG) a side effect may occur with the use of either of these prescribed medications.
So, taking Trazodone while on Metronidazole can prolong the QT interval as an additive effect and can increase the risk of ventricular arrhythmias including torsade de pointes which may cause dizziness, light headedeness, fainting, palpitations, irregular heart beats, shortness of breath and sudden death.
You are therefore advised to consult your treating doctor for an alternate effective antidepressant instead of Trazodone.
Hope this will help.
