Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Our father is 87 and on hospice. We are wondering about the use of morphine (recommended by the hospice nurse). She states that it is used for pain and anxiety. Our father only has pain from a very small bed sore and a daily headache. He does not seem anxious, but is very depressed and often times angry. We have been giving him Tylenol for his headache. Would you recommend starting the use of morphine?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Morphine is required only for uncontrolled pain that shows poor response to conventional analgesics. If the pain severity is low, no need to start Morphine and it might worsen his depression also.
Wishing all the best.
