Hi, I ve just find out that my 17 years old son chew tobacco. He said he doesn t use it a lot only 4 times a week. I think he is addicted already. If I get him nicotine patches would that help him to quit? Also how long it s usually takes to quit smokeless tobacco?
Hi there. I understand and appreciate your concern for tobacco abuse by your child. I would suggest counselling as the first step towards quitting. You need to make him aware of the harmful effects of tobacco use like oral ulcers , bad mouth hygiene and bad breath along with the possibility of cancer on the long run. Nicotine replacement therapy in the form of patches , pastilles or gums help better to control the urge to use tobacco if the person has been counselled well and is mentally prepared to quit and must be ready mentally to bear the withdrawal symptoms like irritability and restlessness. Hope this was helpful.
Understanding your concern. As per your query you have habit of tobacco addiction which contains nicotine, coal tar and other ingredients which are harmful for body. I would suggest you to quit it as early as you can. It can be done by three ways. First of all it is psychological, you should make yourself aware about side effects of smoke. Secondly it can be done by nicotine replacement therapy in the form of patches , pastilles or gums can help and thirdly you can focus on other things rather than on smoke as it will reduce your urge. you should taper the dose in the starting and then you should stop it completely.
Hope your concern has been resolved.
Get Well Soon.
Best Wishes, Dr. Harry Maheshwari
