Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Good morning sir. Is it ok to give nor metrogyl to 10 month old baby. Her loose motions are not stopping despite zinc for 14 days probiotics and fluids. How much to give and for how many days. Stool didn t have any blood even no occult blood but few pus cells and mucus and culture report showed e coli sensitive to Norflox.
I have gone through your query and can understand your concern. Norfloxacin & metronidazole ( brand name norflox & metrogyl) are good combination of drug for diarrhea. Also culture report showed e coli sensitive to Norflox. But a survey found that numerous side effects have been recorded in reference to the unapproved use of norfloxacin in the pediatric population. These are not licensed by the FDA for use in children specially infants due to the risk of fatalities as well as permanent injury to the musculoskeletal system.
I would not recommend norflox for use in 10 year old baby as other safer options like Ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, cefixime, etc are available Metrogyl is recommended and is well tolerated. It should be given 100mg twice/ thrice a day
Hope this information helps.
